Platform fighters are a subgenre of fighting games that take place on a two-dimensional plane, where players control characters who can move freely around the stage. The goal of a platform fighter is to knock your opponents off the stage, usually by dealing damage to them until they are knocked out or by hitting them with a special move that sends them flying off the screen. Platform fighters often feature a variety of different characters with unique abilities, as well as a variety of different stages with different hazards and obstacles.
Platform fighters have been around for decades, with some of the earliest examples dating back to the 1980s. However, the genre really took off in the early 2000s with the release of Super Smash Bros. Melee, which became a critical and commercial success. Since then, a number of other platform fighters have been released, including Brawlhalla, Rivals of Aether, and MultiVersus.
