American Pie is a 1999 teen sex comedy film directed by Paul Weitz and Chris Weitz, written by Adam Herz, and starring Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Seann William Scott, Alyson Hannigan, Tara Reid, Mena Suvari, and Eddie Kaye Thomas. The film follows the lives of four teenage boys as they try to lose their virginity before prom. American Pie was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $235 million worldwide against a production budget of $11 million. It has since become a cult classic and has spawned three sequels: American Pie 2 (2001), American Wedding (2003), and American Reunion (2012).
The film’s most famous scene is the one in which Biggs’ character, Jim Levenstein, gets caught masturbating by his father. The scene is both funny and cringe-inducing, and it perfectly captures the awkwardness of being a teenager. Other memorable scenes include the one in which Klein’s character, Chris “Oz” Ostreicher, loses his virginity to a band camp counselor, and the one in which Scott’s character, Steve Stifler, gets caught having sex with his mother’s friend.
